The Mortier lisse ( German smooth barrel mortar ) was a gun mortar that was introduced into the French army in 1838 and 1839 and which did not differ in function from its predecessors of the 17th and 18th centuries. At the beginning of the First World War , this obsolete material was still available in large quantities in the forts of the Barrière de fer , as there was a great shortage of this type of weapon. They were originally intended in the fortresses to fight enemy approach trenches, to fire grapeshots, hail grenades, incendiary grenades and iron balls ( called bombs ) filled with black powder . The pipes were made of bronze , the height direction was determined by wedges that were clamped under the pipes.
The carriage consisted of two lateral parts made of cast iron , which were connected by wooden beams as spacers.
There were four different calibers:
15 cm
22 cm
27 cm
32 cm
The mortars 32, 27 and 22 were identical in construction and only differed in their dimensions. The mortar 15 was of different designs.
The 27 cm and 32 cm caliber mortars were very heavy and very immobile. Even if it had a lower performance, the mortar de 22 was preferred by the troops for general use. The 15 cm mortar was relatively light in contrast to the others and was therefore significantly more manoeuvrable. It was intended for defense in difficult terrain or fortress sections (e.g. trenches).
Appareil Moisson (These were half wooden barrels (Demi-baril) filled with grenades, so-called cluster munitions ). The lower part consisted of a conical, wooden stopper that was placed on the mouth of the mortar. The top consisted of a kind of wooden barrel filled with grenades.
