The Canon de 138 modèle 1873-74 was a French fortress gun , originally from a 16-pounder muzzle-loading - field gun was with a bronze tube.

In the course of urgently needed fortress guns to equip the newly built defensive barriers against Germany, the so-called “ Barrière de fer ” (Iron Barrier) after the war that was lost in 1870/71 , outdated gun material was modernized.

At the instigation of Général De Reffye, the pipes were initially equipped with a closure and called "Systems de Reffye". This closure is a Reffye closure developed by Général Treuille de Beaulieu. Finally, the tube was placed on a steel carriage designed by Lieutenant Colonel Perrier et Lahitolle in 1875 , called "affût à soulèvement" (elevated carriage).

This cannon was installed in many fortifications before 1900. This was the first larger caliber with a breech that had been specially developed for use in the forts . They were not only placed on the ramparts (free-standing) and only covered by a parapet and trusses , but also in the so-called " Casemate Mougin " under armor protection. Another special mount was used for this.

The weight in the firing position was 3840 kg, the bullet weight was 24 kg. The maximum range was 7,750 meters, the muzzle velocity Vo = 418 m / s.

After 1906 these antiquated pieces disappeared and were replaced by the more modern Canon de 120 mm L modèle 1878 .

At least one copy is still in the exhibition in the “Musée de l'artillerie” in Draguignan .
