The Canon de 155 mm L modèle 1877 was a rear-loading cannon of the "de Bange" system of the 19th century with a rifled barrel, which was designed as a heavy field gun.

It replaced the cannons of the Reffye (1870) and Lahitolle (1875) systems.

concept

Its developer Charles Valérand Ragon de Bange was a polytechnician, colonel of the artillery and director of the "Atelier-de-précision" of the "Dépôt central" in Paris .

The system was the first to have a gas-tight screw cap , which is still used today. The closure allowed a much better use than it had been possible until then. The previous locking systems suffered from the fact that gases and flames escaped from the lock, which not only endangered the gunners, but also led to a considerable loss of performance. The pipe was rigidly mounted in a block carriage. Due to the lack of a barrel return, precise firing (e.g. at point targets) was only possible by realigning the gun after each shot. At the beginning of the First World War, the French artillery made do by equipping the cannon on heavy wood-concrete bedding, which was equipped with a Filloux braking and recovery device and accommodated the entire gun. The consequent immobility played under the circumstances of trench warfare but only a minor role. This shortcoming could only be remedied with the introduction of the successor model Canon de 105 mle 1913 Schneider .

More guns with the breech of the System de Bange

1,400 of these guns were still in use during the First World War . They were also used in the Spanish Civil War , the Polish-Soviet War and World War II .
