The Mortier de 270 modèle 1885 ( German  mortar 270 mm model 1885 ) - colloquially also called Mortier de Bange de 270 - was a gun of the French coastal artillery of the 19th century, which was designed by Charles Valérand Ragon de Bange .

concept

On May 11, 1874, the War Ministry specified the 120, 155 and 220 millimeters for the cannons and 220 and 270 millimeters for the mortars. The last drafts for the mortar were completed on May 24, 1878, but construction of the devices did not begin until 1885.

The mortar 270 modèle 1885 had a drawn barrel with a rotary crank lock - both together weighed 5,800 kilograms. The carriage, which weighed 10,700 kilograms, had four small wheels that ran on the side rails of a steel frame. A hydropneumatic cylinder was attached to the front of the steel frame and attached to the mount. This cylinder absorbed the recoil forces when fired. It was the same principle as had already been used in the Mortier de 220 modèle 1880 (mortar 220 mm model 1880).

use

The mortar was used in the First World War as part of the heavy artillery of the French army and was the largest caliber used after the 340 mm railway gun.

At the beginning of the Second World War there were still 24 mortars, nothing is known about their whereabouts.
