action

season 1

As a child, Susanne Mertens wanted to be a zoo veterinarian . She and husband Klaus had agreed not to go back to work until their son Jonas started school. As zoo veterinarian Dr. Vogel offers her the vacancy as an assistant doctor , she reminds her husband of the old agreement. Klaus is anything but enthusiastic. Susanne realizes that she cannot rely on his support in the new situation. Meanwhile, Susanne's father, zoo director Prof. Baumgart, is retiring: the mercantile management style of his successor, Dr. Ferryman arranges for Dr. Vogel to resign - now Susanne is solely responsible. During a spectacular action in which she saves her son and his school friend Rebecca from an escaped brown bear , Susanne meets Rebecca's father, Christoph Lentz. The two immediately like each other and become a couple during the course of the first season. At the end of the season, Susanne and husband Klaus divorce.

season 2

Sven Martinek, Elisabeth Lanz, Paula Hartmann and Elisabeth Böhm at the Leipzig Zoo while shooting the third season (2009)

In order to further advance his “zoo of the future”, zoo director Dr. Ferryman the largest tropical hall in the world. Smiled at as megalomaniac from within his own ranks, the only support for his million dollar project is from State Secretary Lena Weingarten. The initially professional liaison quickly turned into a hot affair, but it had to remain a secret under all circumstances. When the relationship is exposed, suspicion quickly falls on Susanne Mertens, who was the only one who knew about it. Professionally, too, Susanne is getting increasingly involved in differences of opinion with her boss. And privately, she hardly survived the separation from Klaus with her son Jonas and settled in with Christoph Lentz and his daughter Rebecca in the new shared home, because the family idyll of Christoph's ex-wife Viola is disturbed: Back from the USA, she moves into her immediate home Neighborhood. In addition, the young blended family has to struggle with two hard blows of fate: Susanne's parents Georg and Charlotte, usually always on hand for good advice, are meanwhile more concerned with themselves due to Charlotte's long-hushed illness. And Susanne loses her baby in an accident at the zoo.

season 3

Dr. Susanne Mertens receives from zoo director Dr. Ferryman has a new assistant, Nicole Sommer, at his side. The trained vet leaves no stone unturned to spin intrigues against Susanne. Susanne has to assert herself against her two opponents with determination and sovereignty. After a serious mistake by Ms. Sommer, Fährmann dismisses her and Dr. Mertens is allowed to continue working with her former veterinarian assistant. But Susanne's parents also have their worries: Charlotte pays full attention to her studies at the art college - to the chagrin of husband Georg. He has enough to do himself: Dr. Fährmann has offered him a position as a curator and in this position he is traveling to China. The private life of Susanne and partner Christoph Lentz is also going through some turbulence. So unexpectedly Christoph's father turns up again, which leads to misunderstandings. Susanne's son Jonas also worries the two of them: he is hiding a sports injury. Although she and Christoph have their hands full with their offspring and Susanne has suffered a miscarriage, her desire to have children remains unbroken. Even after Susanne receives the devastating result that a new pregnancy is impossible, she and Christoph stick to the offspring plans. Adoption is being considered, but this is rejected by the youth welfare office. When six-year-old Luisa is being treated in Christoph's clinic and it turns out that she comes from a problematic home, Christoph and Susanne take Luisa into their family as a foster child.

Season 4

Dr. Susanne Mertens is able to work again after a serious illness and a stay in the rehab clinic. Lord Mayor Herrenbrück appoints the new zoo curator Dr. Tom Berkhoff joins in, and Prof. Georg Baumgart therefore does not get the position promised to him. After Charlotte Baumgart couldn't find a gallery that wanted to exhibit her pictures after completing her art college, she decided to open her own gallery. But when converting an old warehouse there are many problems, in the end the two almost lose their house.
Meanwhile, Susanne has to deal with the new zookurator Dr. Arrange Berkhoff. At first she is not enthusiastic about the charming newcomer to the Leipzig Zoo, because she finds him arrogant and not particularly competent. However, Dr. Berkhoff had feelings for Dr. Mertens and after she starts studying ornithology on his advice, the two get closer. This leads to a relationship crisis between Susanne and Christoph. This then also has to face existential problems, because after a routine appendix operation a little boy falls into a coma. Christoph is accused of serious medical malpractice, which costs him his post as chief physician. Together with his father Dr. Matthias Lentz feverishly and ultimately successfully searches for the real cause of the accident.
After Christoph's father does not really feel at home in the old people's home, he moves in with his son and Susanne.
After much back and forth, everything turns out fine, Dr. Tom Berkhoff leaves the zoo again, Susanne and Christoph are reconciled and Susanne's father is given the vacated position of curator. Things are running smoothly again for Susanne's mother, too, because the friend of Christoph's father, Ursula Rose, sells her pictures in her café and gives both of them a real windfall.

Season 5

After Christoph and Susanne have just overcome their marital crisis, new disaster threatens. Christoph is sent on a research trip to Brazil for professional reasons. His daughter Rebecca therefore moves to live with her mother in the USA. When Christoph returns, he confesses to his wife that he has fallen in love again. Susanne throws him out of the common house without further ado. As a result, she can no longer financially hold the big house and takes an apartment in the city with the children. Son Jonas is also living with his mother again, as he “flew” from the sports boarding school in London. Foster daughter Luisa suffers so much from the separation of her foster parents that she secretly looks for her birth parents and decides to live with them. But she soon realizes what she has in Susanne as a mother and returns to her.

In the zoo, Susanne has to take over the provisional management after the zoo director Dr. Ferryman was killed in a car accident in Africa. When a new director is found, this headstrong Dr. Blum represents a real challenge for the entire zoo staff. He runs the company with very questionable methods, which is often very disadvantageous for the working atmosphere. He also gets Susanne's father to give up his position as a curator. The vet defies the instructions of her new boss several times, because she still sees animal welfare first and not publicity. Despite Susanne's convincing arguments, Dr. Blum is not ready to change his management style, and the "so strong" man hides his multiple sclerosis disease from everyone , which repeatedly puts him in his personal limits, but which he does not want to show.

Season 6

Dr. Blum surprisingly took a job in Africa and unexpectedly quit in Leipzig, so that Dr. Mertens has to take over the provisional management of the zoo again until she is replaced by the career woman Dr. Amal Bekele is replaced again. Christoph's daughter Rebecca, who is continuing her specialist training as a zoo and wildlife doctor at the Leipzig Zoo, is available for her medical support. But Rebecca gives up her job after a short time and Karoline Schneider takes the vacant position as an assistant doctor. Susanne's son Jonas has found his way and started training with the police in Chemnitz . However, after a few months he surprises his mother with the news that he will be the father of twins. Susanne is irritated and skeptical about how her son wants to bring education and family under one roof, when the two parents-to-be do not even have their own apartment so far. Susanne maintains a friendly relationship with Christoph, which benefits the mutual upbringing of her foster daughter Luisa. Luise was in a boarding school in Great Britain for four weeks and has lived with Susanne and Christoph since her return. Susanne suddenly fell in love with the musician Hannes Zoller, but gave up this love in favor of her work and family. Christoph has left the clinic service in recent years and taken over a pediatric practice. With Susanne he begins to get along better again and the signs point to reconciliation.

background

Veterinarian Dr. Mertens first practiced in a television film in the Leipzig Zoo in 2002 and was intended as a one-off, complete story. Due to the high audience rating, an entire series was then commissioned, which, with more than six million viewers, is one of the most successful on ARD. Many roles have been reassigned for the series. Elisabeth Lanz took over the role of Susanne Mertens from Christina Plate . In contrast, Ludwig Zimmeck as Jonas Mertens and Horst Günter Marx as Klaus Mertens stayed in their role . Gunter Schoß changed the role of Susanne Morten's superior Dr. Vogel to her father Georg Baumgart.

In 2010 a special was filmed in which the viewer can see the main actors and the animals over their shoulders in front of and behind the camera and the animal trainers reveal how they calm zebras, snakes and eagle owls and which pigs do exactly what they want demands them.

Since the beginning of season 3, 2013, the episodes of the series for the blind and visually impaired have also been broadcast as audio films . In 2017, Mitteldeutsche Rundfunk also had seasons 1 and 2 equipped with an audio description for the blind and visually impaired and broadcast the episodes in the Saturday morning program. As part of season 4, an episode was filmed for the first time outside of Leipzig in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.
