    occupation

Verbotene Liebe is a German soap opera that was broadcast from January 2, 1995 to June 26, 2015 in the evening program of the first .

    Production framework

Ehreshoven Palace served as the exterior backdrop for Königsbrunn

    Locations

Verbotene Liebe was produced by UFA Serial Drama GmbH (formerly Grundy UFA Fernsehproduktion) from October 17, 1994 . From the summer of 2003, the production was located in the Magic Media Company studios in the Cologne-Ossendorf industrial park . Before that, it was shot in the WDR studios in Cologne-Bocklemünd for over eight years . WDR had specially invested DM 20 million in the new studio complex, which offers 17,000 square meters of space for 20 different backdrops. The plot of the series played for many years in Cologne and Düsseldorf , the last few years only in Düsseldorf. External locations included the Königsallee and Ehreshoven Palace in Engelskirchen as Königsbrunn Palace , and for a few years the Alte Mälzerei in Düsseldorf as the seat of Ligne Clarisse Lahnstein . From 1995 to 2000, Schloss Dyck was an external location as Schloss Friedenau (von Anstetten family), and from 2001 to 2003 the Kitzburg as Gut Schönberg (von Beyenbach family).

From March 21, 2011, scenes of a new storyline were created on Mallorca , which were filmed in Santanyí . Production on the Spanish island ended after seven months on October 14, 2011. Initially, the consideration was given to resuming filming after the winter break, as the motif appealed to many viewers positively. In March 2012, however, it was declared that the action in Mallorca was considered over.

    International sales

At the annual MIPTV in Cannes , one of the leading international trade fairs for the purchase and sale of entertainment media and content, the episodes mentioned by ZDF Enterprises , which owns international licensing rights for Verbotene Liebe , were shown as a separate season under the name Straight to Your Heart markets. The series is normally sold abroad - for example in Sweden , Hungary , Indonesia , Russia , Greece and Croatia - as licensed in-house productions called Forbidden Love , such as the love story of Luise von Waldensteyck and Gregor Mann .

    Cooperations

In April 2012, the role Arno Brandner (portrayed by Konrad Krauss ) began to deal with the problem of “ dementia ” in the series plot. For this purpose, the team of authors obtained detailed information in advance from the German Alzheimer's Society about this disease and its consequences for those affected and their relatives. The production company is now working together with the Federal Ministry of Health to create the necessary social awareness and greater awareness of the disease outside of the series. In addition to many other initiated actions, it supported the ministry's open day, for example, in order to bring the subject, which is still taboo, more into the public eye. On August 27, 2012, Federal Health Minister Daniel Bahr visited the series set to talk to producers, those responsible for the station and actors about this topic. Then he and Krauss signed the “Book of Memories”, with which the German Alzheimer's Society wants to set an example against forgetting. Its first chairman, Heike von Lützau-Hohlbein , finally presented producer Guido Reinhardt together with the actors with a check for 5,000 euros.

In May 2014 it was announced that there would be a crossover between Forbidden Love and In All Friendship . In the 660th episode of the medical series, which was broadcast on September 30, 2014, Miriam Lahnstein and Sebastian Schlemmer appeared in their roles from Forbidden Love . The soap opera thus became part of the series universe of In allerfreund , to which, through previous crossover episodes, Schloss Einstein (broadcast in June 2003), Marienhof (September 2003), veterinarian Dr. Mertens (December 2011), cheerful to fatal: Ex files (December 2013) and the IaF spin-off In all friendship - The young doctors (December 2014, January 2015) belong.

    Deposition in the first

Due to the steadily dwindling visual participation over the years - the number of viewers had more than halved from 2.9 million in 1998 to 1.3 million (2013), which corresponded to a market share of only 6.8 percent and due to the changed competitive situation in the previous evening programs - the broadcaster announced on July 17, 2014 that Verbotene Liebe should be discontinued because of these low values. A good two months later, the plan to show the series instead on Fridays in a weekly rhythm became more concrete. Accordingly, the daily broadcast ended on January 29, 2015 and episode 4647.

Due to three unscheduled broadcast failures on December 29, 2014 and January 9 and 13, 2015 - in addition to double programming on January 23 - two edited episodes were broadcast on February 6 as a harbinger of the weekly broadcast before their regular Friday rhythm began on February 27 and lasted until June 26th. The episode contingent necessary for this, which lasted until episode 4664, had already been filmed on November 14, 2014, which is why all employees and actors had to terminate their contracts on the same date. A binding decision on the future of the format should not be made until next spring; production was suspended until then.

With reduced storylines, but higher quality camera and set equipment as well as more outside shooting dates, more viewers should be won again. Nevertheless, with just under a million viewers and a weekly market share of around 5%, they fell short of expectations, so that the day before the season finale it was finally announced that the series would be completely discontinued. Since the storylines were kept open for a possible sequel at the end of the first weekly round, the latest entanglements in the last episodes and with them the fate of individual characters remained unsolved towards the end.

After the last broadcast, the series “veteran” Gabriele Metzger gave a short speech and finally said goodbye to the audience with the entire production team.

Verbotene Liebe has been an entertainment heavyweight on German television for 17 years now. I am very pleased with the quality of this format: thanks to the use of high technical standards, we were able to establish the production as the luxury series in Germany. For my colleagues and me, it is a very special challenge to tell 45 minutes a day at the highest level. Thanks to everyone involved and the trust of the broadcaster! "

    - Guido Reinhardt

“A lot is produced in the fast-moving television industry, but little is done in large numbers. 4000 episodes are therefore an expression of a true success story. The Forbidden Love has remained true to itself over the years and is still unmistakable for the viewer. "

    Continuation as streaming format

In June 2020 it was announced that a new edition called Verbotene Liebe - Next Generation of the series for the streaming service TVNOW was being worked on in cooperation with the RTL Group . This is a consequence of the great success of old episodes on the same platform. Filming is scheduled to start that same year.

    Framework for action

The plot of the series is initially based on the Australian soap "Sons and Daughters", which was not broadcast in Germany. In contrast to soaps such as Lindenstrasse , Marienhof , Unter uns or Gute Zeiten, Bad Zeiten , the main part of the plot of Verbotene Liebe was set in high society , while problems of the so-called average citizen were treated marginally. The intrigues in the aristocratic families, as portrayed by von Anstetten, von Beyenbach or von Lahnstein, are more reminiscent of American soaps such as Dallas or The Denver Clan and thus set themselves apart from said other German soaps that have far more identification potential offer for the viewer. Forbidden love also deliberately played with the social differences between the upper class in Düsseldorf and the middle class, as embodied by the Brandner family, for example.

In the series recurring, very similar storylines and roles were played out. The rotation intervals were set for about one or two years until an old story with new actors was shot and broadcast. The title “Forbidden Love” provided the framework for the plot. Either the chosen one was taken, an ignorant relative, belonging to a different sexual orientation or a different social class, etc. Once these problems had been resolved, there was a risk of relationship crises due to suspected fraud, possibly life-threatening accidents, missing proofs of love, especially in pubescent roles or due to pregnancies previously, as a rule, did not go to term due to deliberate or unintentional loss of the embryo. However, this changed significantly from 2006, when a total of three newborns or toddlers were introduced into the series. In addition, a role's sudden desire to move was a very popular action module to question a relationship. After all, this motif was used several times by scriptwriters to write a character whose actor wants to drop out of the series.

Recurring patterns also ran through new actors when they were introduced. Often a brother, a sister, a father or a mother turned up who had never been mentioned before, or a previously unknown relative was sought.

In order to give each actor "character", he or she was assigned a certain talent or a certain dream, as in almost every ARD series, which he or she has to fulfill in the role. Some hobbies were only suitable for the "VL" budget to a limited extent, which is why piloting dreams in a helicopter or airplane had to end after a short time with a crash. But even without the financial restrictions, these longings, presented as “lifelong dreams”, were often no longer mentioned in the script after a few weeks and only served the short-term positioning of a role.

    Charisma

From December 1995 to March 1996 a half-hour summary of the five episodes of the previous week was shown on Saturdays under the title “ Marienhof - and Verbotene-Liebe -Weekend” in the evening program “ARD vor 8”. On January 1, 1996, the WDR broadcast an hour-long compilation of the best scenes as Verbotene Liebe 1995 .

From September 5, 2007 (episode 2999-3000), Verbotene Liebe was the first daily soap on German television to be broadcast in 16: 9 format.

With episode 3760 broadcast on January 7, 2011, the series began broadcasting in HD quality. In addition to the appearance and the camera work, the dramaturgy also changed: instead of three storylines, the story was told on two levels. At the beginning of each episode, a voiceover introduced the topics from the perspective of a role figure and summarized them briefly at the end. This happened for the first time in episode 3760, in which Nico von Lahnstein described her situation and that of various other characters. From mid-August, however, this element was no longer used regularly in every episode, but only sporadically or rarely. In addition, the opening credits were no longer shown directly after the review, but only after one or more first short scenes. Except for the newly introduced display of individual episode titles, the changes mentioned were dropped in the course of the shortening of the episodes in January 2012.

After the second ARD Daily Marienhof was discontinued on June 15, 2011, Verbotene Liebe took over this broadcasting slot and from then on it was broadcast twice as long. In order to be able to incorporate a new storyline on Mallorca, the decision was made consciously against showing double episodes, but extended the transmission time of an episode to 45 minutes. Thus, the two-pronged line of action, which was established as before in Cologne and Düsseldorf, was expanded to include a third. Until this format went on air on June 21, 2011, double episodes were broadcast from June 16 to 20. From January 2012, the extended broadcasting time of Verbotene Liebe was shortened by around ten minutes, which was due to the restructuring of the ARD's early evening program. This was accompanied by the postponement of the start time to 5:50 p.m. After the Gottschalk Live format , which was decisive for the new early evening schedule , was discontinued, Verbotene Liebe was broadcast on the previous slot again from June 11, 2012.

Between 2011 and 2013, the respective first broadcast from the previous day was repeated in the morning program of some third programs as well as on einsfestival . For over a year, the MDR (June 22, 2011 to March 21, 2013) and einsfestival (September 6, 2011 to March 21, 2013) had the series in their programs, almost exactly one year for the NDR (March 26, 2012 to March 15 2013) and Bavarian TV for about six months (April 16, 2012 to October 12, 2012). Since the series was occasionally canceled, for example because of sports broadcasts, some stations sometimes showed the same episode on two consecutive days (e.g. MDR), while others only showed this episode once (e.g. einsfestival).

TV reruns of older episodes ran on ARD from January 5 to September 25, 1998 and from June 22 to December 30, 1999, on MDR from 1997 to 1998 and on WDR from 1999 to 2000. The first episode started with all broadcasts were canceled after a maximum of two years. Only the pay TV broadcaster passion has been repeating the series continuously since December 1, 2006. After about a year, the first episode was started again to enable new subscribers to get started. There the episodes were initially broadcast three to four times a day, now two to three times. In addition, on the weekend there was a repetition of all episodes shown during the week in one go.

    Internet presence

Starting in 2007, exclusive additional material was produced for the official GrundyUFA digitalDrama homepage , which for the most part took up the current story from the perspective of one or more main characters or shed light on various roles.

The finale was finally broadcast live on the internet and allowed viewers to play along and interact with the remaining five characters.

    Apps and episode offers

In autumn 2012 it was announced that the digital agency exozet was developing the first second screen application - more precisely an application for smartphones and tablets - for a daily series format on behalf of GrundyUFA . Exozet and the GrundyUFA digitalDrama department developed their creative concept together with selected fans as part of a workshop on January 11, 2013, which was intended to ensure that the audience was as close as possible to their wishes. The aim was to create an interactive brand experience, which through connection to Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest ensures a dynamic exchange of viewers on the social web. With the basic version "V 1.0" launched on March 1, 2013, which was initially only available as a free download for the iPhone and iPad, new standards were set in cross-media fictional entertainment.

A little later, the extended version "V 2.0" also made it possible to use it for Android systems and offered extended functions with regard to the output output. It also made it possible to access the YouTube channel set up in connection with the app development, via which, in addition to the entire episode contingent, which was gradually put online between September 2012 and July 2016, blogs, web series, trailers and others Background features such as backstage videos, which were previously only available for a limited period of time on the official website, are permanently available to fans. In the summer of 2015, the series offer was expanded again over a large range, but some episodes were also missing. occupation

The actors at the anniversary celebration for 18 years of Forbidden Love in Düsseldorf (2013)
    • Gabriele Metzger as Charlie Schneider has been part of the permanent staff since the first episode . Konrad Krauss was also one of the "veterans" , who worked as Arno Brandner until November 2009. A few months after his exit, he returned to the series in March 2010 and stayed with it - with some breaks, often several months - until his series death in September 2012. Claudia Scarpatetti , who had also been there since episode 1 as Susanne Brandner , got back into the series after a seven-year break on March 23, 2005 and stayed until April 24, 2008. She returned briefly in September 2012 to her father's funeral back.
    • Since episode 109 - almost from the beginning of the series - Miriam Lahnstein has played the serial beast Tanja von Lahnstein , who was known to viewers as Tanja von Anstetten for many years, with a few interruptions . On March 30, 2007, as on June 9, 2005, she left the series to go on maternity leave again. From December 12, 2007 she was there again for exactly two years until she left the series again on December 14, 2009, while her role Tanja was in a coma in the following months. On April 6, 2010, Lahnstein returned from a long break. Between October 2013 and February 2014, Lahnstein was again only partially present on the screens because her role was again in a coma - this time, however, no longer as part of a complete break.
    • As was officially announced on March 28, 2011, Isa Jank returned after ten years in her star role as Clarissa von Anstetten , which she embodied from the first episode until October 5, 2001. With episode 4250, which aired on March 20, 2013, Jank finally got out with an open ending for her character.
    • In episode 1, flashbacks to 1975 described the problem that led to the separation of the twins Jan Brandner and Julia von Anstetten . In this context, main roles from the plot appeared from 1995. While the actors Isa Jank and Ingrid Capelle , who were cast for the characters Clara “Clarissa” Kaufmann (née Prozeski) and Fiona Beckmann, also took part in these scenes, the characters Arno Brandner and Christoph von Anstetten , who were 20 years younger, were not made by Konrad Krauss and Jürgen Zartmann embodied, but portrayed by Dieter Gring and Jörg Zufall .
    • The change of actor to the role of Oliver Kopp , which took place in 1997, is the only one so far that has also been discussed in terms of content. The figure suffered severe facial injuries in a fire, which resulted in numerous operations. As a result, Oliver , who had escaped from prison, was not recognized by anyone he had dealt with before.
    • On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the series, numerous former actors had guest appearances. These were Nadine Brandt & Daniel Wiemer (episode 2376), Aline Hochscheid & Kerstin Landsmann (episode 2377), Kay Böger & Andreas Stenschke (episode 2378), Jutta Fastian (episode 2379), Clemens Löhr (episode 2380), Marina Mehlinger & Luca Zamperoni (episode 2381), Steve Hudson (episode 2382), Meike Gottschalk & Broder B. Hendrix (episode 2383), Markus Prinz & Kerstin Radt (episode 2384) and Raphaela Dell & Freya Trampert (episode 2385).
    • In the address broadcast after the last episode, for the sake of fun - as it was not possible from a purely logical point of view - it was claimed that the often mentioned but never seen kitchen maître at the Schneider was none other than butler Justus Stiehl . However, it was not taken into account that Xavier Moreau is not a pure off-screen character, but that the character in episodes 2571-2578 (2005) was already portrayed by Antonio Paradiso .

    supporting cast

Sorted according to the order of entry. If characters appear more frequently within a large-scale narrative, but at irregular intervals, the individual appearances are once again differentiated "temporarily". If, on the other hand, they are not in a fixed context in terms of content due to their role function (relatives, occupation), their "sporadic" appearance is indicated if they are present frequently over several years, in order to make the size of the characters in question in contrast to each other easier to see.
