Graphic representation of audience ratings for the program "Gottschalk Live"

Gottschalk Live was a talk show with Thomas Gottschalk that was broadcast Monday through Thursday on the television station Das Erste . The first broadcast took place on January 23, 2012, the 70th and final broadcast 135 days later on June 6, 2012.

Concept and content

In the beginning, the broadcast was always live from 19:20 to 19:50 from Berlin , from the Humboldt-Carré near Gendarmenmarkt . The audience was able to ask questions and join the discussion via social media . The show was regularly about current topics of the day. At least one guest was received in every broadcast, and there were always live broadcasts to people in locations all over the world. Telephone calls were also an element of the program. Another component was the photo / video / article of the day section.

The show's theme song is a cover version of Bohemian Like You by the American rock band The Dandy Warhols . Towards the end, the broadcast was always interrupted by the weather in the first . The studio was developed by Florian Wieder .

revision

After some relatively weak ratings and bad reviews, Das Erste announced in March 2012 that the show would be revised under the new editor-in-chief Markus Peichl . The relaunch led, among other things, that a recently introduced category in which Oliver lime kiln movie reviews imagined was set immediately. From the broadcast on March 19, 2012, there was a live audience in the studio and the editorial staff who had previously been in the studio had to give way. The ARD also announced content revisions to give the show a clearer structure and thus still achieve the hoped-for quotas. The idea of giving Thomas Gottschalk a female sidekick was rejected again. From April 2012, the program was no longer broadcast live, but recorded in the late afternoon and then cut to fit the evening. This should make the processes within the program appear more relaxed, as the interruptions for advertising and the weather could be moderated without time pressure.

attitude

On April 18, 2012, the ARD announced that the broadcast on June 7, 2012, would be the last episode of the TV program Gottschalk Live . After poor audience response and low audience ratings, ARD decided to discontinue the program early and made use of a contractually agreed special right of termination due to poor ratings. Gottschalk Live was never able to achieve the average quota of around 10 percent required by ARD after the pilot broadcast.

Thomas Gottschalk, who originally wanted to moderate the format - according to his own statement in the chat on the show - for at least three years and was even willing to commit over five years, took note of the decision with regret. Like the chairwoman of ARD, Monika Piel, he also spoke of a failed experiment and risk.

On April 27, 2012, the editorial team of Gottschalk Live announced that from May 2, 2012 Thomas Gottschalk will no longer invite celebrities to his show. Instead, Gottschalk started the funding project 66 Dreams , in which people could present personal dreams, aid projects and wishes and, in the best case, received financial support. The viewers decided which project should be funded through daily internet and telephone voting. In the last broadcast on June 6, 2012, a winner was determined from the top 5, who is additionally supported by Gottschalk and other celebrities.

One day after Gottschalk Live ended , Gottschalk appeared in a live talk broadcast by Spiegel Online on the Internet and stated that he intends to continue appearing on television in the future.

criticism

Over time, the show increasingly had to deal with the accusation that it had no right concept. The false announcements made regularly also contributed to this. In January, for example, it was announced that videos of a newly born polar bear baby would be shown every day, but this was completely abandoned after a short time without any revision. It was similar with the cinema column by Oliver Kalkofe, which disappeared without a word after 3 episodes, although they had already produced their own opening credits for it, or the claim that Gottschalk would get a sidekick after the relaunch. In addition, the program started with the intention that Gottschalk would chat for half an hour after each show. Gottschalk's online editorial team later announced that from now on he would only be in the chat once a week, but much longer, which never happened, but only resulted in it shortly afterwards, weeks before the relaunch, without any further Comment was no longer chat.

Gottschalk himself said that the format with which he had failed was not the format that he wanted to do.

Audience ratings

In the following lists all quotas from "Gottschalk Live" are listed by month. In addition, an additional column with guests is shown from January to April. From May onwards, the projects for “66 dreams” are listed in that column.
