Erwin Esteban Schrott Baladon (born December 21, 1972 in Montevideo , Uruguay ) is a Uruguayan opera singer ( bass-baritone ), he has also had Spanish citizenship since 2010.

Life

Erwin Schrott was born in the Montevidean district of La Comercial into a working-class family with Austro-German ancestors. He made his debut in Montevideo at the age of 22 in the role of Roucher in Andrea Chénier and soon sang various leading roles at the Teatro Municipal in Santiago de Chile , including Timur in Turandot , Sparafucile in Rigoletto and Ramphis in Aida . At the Royal Opera House Covent Garden he sang the title role in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro . In 1999 he became internationally known when he won first prize from both the audience and the jury in the Operalia competition.

The artist is a regular guest at major opera stages such as: the Vienna State Opera , Los Angeles Opera, the Metropolitan Opera New York , the Royal Opera House London , the Teatro San Carlo Naples , the Zurich Opera House , and the La Scala in Milan , the National Opera de Paris (where he sang the role of Figaro in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro in June 2011 ), to name just a few of the many. In 2008 he made his Salzburg Festival debut alongside Dorothea Röschmann , Ekaterina Siurina , Matthew Polenzani and Annette Dasch as Leporello in Mozart's Don Giovanni . One critic wrote:

“A singer was the focus of social interest, simply because they wanted to know what artistic potential Anna Netrebko laughed at. After the listening test, the results must be: Firstly, Erwin Schrott's Salzburg debut as Leporello was by no means too early, and secondly, he might have been the more effective line-up for Don Giovanni ( Christopher Maltman as an assertive macho), since he has a more masculine, robust, voluminous vocal vitality proved. "

In 2012 he received an Echo Klassik in the category Classical Without Borders for the album Rojotango , which was released under Sony Classical.

In spring 2015 he gave the Ramfis in Giuseppe Verdi's Aida at the side of Jonas Kaufmann and Anja Harteros in a concert performance .

In 2017 Schrott made his debut in Berlin as Scarpia in the Puccini opera Tosca , and has since been celebrated in this role worldwide:

"" Schrott masters the stage with a vocal but above all scenic imposing presence. He has his own and complete vision of the character and he fills it with nuances and details in a manner that makes him unforgettable. All the refinement in the small gestures, inflexions and theatrical minutiae in his performance as an actor, Schrott transposes also in the singing, which becomes full of intention and meaning. Erwin Schrott is probably, today, one of the best performers that one can find for the role of the sinister and lascivious chief of police. " (opera-online) "

In addition to his opera engagements, Schrott has been performing regularly since 2011 with the Rojotango program with tangos, milongas and folk songs from his South American homeland.

Private

Schrott was in a relationship with the Russian-Austrian soprano Anna Netrebko until 2013 . They have been the parents of a son since September 5, 2008, whom they named "Tiago Aruã". "Tiago" means "Jakob" in German. The second name “Aruã” comes from the Charrúas language and means “valuable” and “peaceful”. Schrott also has a daughter Iara (* 1998) from a previous relationship, who appears as a singer in musicals. He is now married to the Iranian make-up artist Niyousha Nasri.
