Christopher Maltman

Christopher Maltman (born January 1, 1970 ) is a British opera singer ( baritone ).

life and career

Maltman holds a degree in biochemistry from the University of Warwick and a vocal training course from the Royal Academy of Music in London. In 1997 he won the song award at the Cardiff Singer of the World competition and started a career that quickly took him to the most important European opera and concert stages.

Opera

At the Royal Opera House Covent Garden he appeared as Papageno ( Die Zauberflöte ), Guglielmo ( Così fan tutte ), Malatesta ( Don Pasquale ), Marcello ( La Bohème ), Ramiro ( L'heure espagnole ) and as a forester in the Clever Vixen . At the Glyndebourne Festival he sang Papageno, Figaro ( Le nozze di Figaro ) and Sid ( Albert Herring ). His star role is the title role of Britten's Billy Budd , which he has sung successfully at the Welsh National Opera , at the Teatro Regio in Turin, in Seattle, Frankfurt and at the Bavarian State Opera . In Munich he also sang Tarquinius ( The Rape of Lucretia ), Guglielmo, Marcello, Albert ( Werther ) and most recently the title role in Don Giovanni . Guest engagements have also taken Maltman to the Berlin State Opera (Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia ), the English National Opera and the Aldeburgh Festival (Tarquinius), the Theater an der Wien and the Opéra National de Paris (Graf in Le nozze di Figaro ), to the Paris Opéra-Comique and the Wiener Festwochen (Aeneas in Dido and Aeneas under William Christie ) and to Hamburg (Oreste in Iphigénie en Tauride ). At the Metropolitan Opera he was a. a. to be heard as Papageno, Silvio ( Pagliacci ) and Harlequin ( Ariadne auf Naxos ) . In the USA he made guest appearances in San Francisco, Seattle and San Diego. At the Salzburg Festival he played Don Giovanni in 2008 and 2010, Guglielmo (Così fan tutte) in 2009 and the title role in Harrison Birtwistles Gawain in 2013 . 2015 he gave as part of the Salzburg Whitsun Festival to Orestes in Gluck's Iphigénie en Tauride (Director: Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier ). In 2018 he sang the role of Mark Rutland in the New York premiere of the opera Marnie by Nico Muhly .

Concerts

Maltman is a sought-after concert singer and has performed under conductors such as Christoph von Dohnányi , John Adams , Roger Norrington , Simon Rattle , Colin Davis , Nikolaus Harnoncourt , John Eliot Gardiner , James Conlon , Esa-Pekka Salonen and Kurt Masur . He has given recitals at renowned European concert halls, as well as at New York's Carnegie Hall and at Lincoln Center . He is a regular guest at the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg and at London's Wigmore Hall , where he sang and recorded Schubert's three great song cycles with Graham Johnson . He has also recorded Schumann's Dichterliebe and the Liederkreis op. 24 with Graham Johnson, a Debussy album with Malcolm Martineau and a CD of English songs with the pianist Roger Vignoles .

Movie

He made his screen starring role in the 2003 film adaptation of John Adams ' The Death of Klinghoffer , and played the title role in the 2010 film Juan by Kasper Holten, based on Mozart's Don Giovanni .
