BBC Cardiff Singer of the World
The BBC Cardiff Singer of the World (only Cardiff Singer of the World from 1983 to 2001 ) is a classical singing competition that has been held by the BBC in Cardiff , Welsh since 1983 . The bi-annual competition has the divisions opera and song , while men and women are each counted together. There has also been an audience award since 2003.
History and organization
The competition was launched by BBC Wales in 1983 to celebrate the opening of the newly built St David's Hall concert venue in Cardiff . St David's Hall became the seat of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales . Since 1983 the competition has been held in June every two years - i.e. in odd years. In 1989, the song competition was added to the main opera arias competition . Whoever takes part in the song competition must also take part in the main competition, but not the other way around.
To qualify for the finals in Cardiff, auditions were held at various locations around the world in autumn of the previous year - in even years . 20 singers are admitted to the final round, with only one participant per country of origin being admitted to represent their country. The winner of the Welsh Singers Competition is automatically qualified to participate in the BBC competition and represents Wales there . Participants must be between 18 and 32 years old in the competition year.
The competition is decided by a jury made up of experienced singers, musicians and music experts. The jury members included Carlo Bergonzi , Marilyn Horne , Gundula Janowitz , Sherrill Milnes , Christoph Prégardien , Joan Sutherland , René Kollo and Gwyneth Jones .
The competition is organized by BBC Wales and televised on BBC Two , BBC Four and BBC Wales TV. The finals and winners' concerts can be heard on the radio on BBC Radio 3 , BBC Radio Wales and the Welsh program BBC Radio Cymru . The competition is supported by the Welsh National Opera and the City of Cardiff .
