Sherrill Eustace Milnes (born January 10, 1935 in Downers Grove , Illinois ) is an American opera singer ( baritone ), who is particularly known for his Verdi interpretations. From 1965 to 1997 he appeared at the Metropolitan Opera (in New York ), where he made his debut as Valentin in Gonoud's Faust after success at the New York City Opera .

He began his career in 1960 in Boston as Masetto in Don Giovanni by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart . He then briefly studied with the soprano Rosa Ponselle and sang Gerard in Andrea Chénier by Umberto Giordano at the Baltimore Opera , which she directed .

In addition to his American successes, he made his debut in 1964 as Figaro in Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia at the Teatro Nuovo in Milan , but it wasn't until 1968 that his appearance in Verdi's Luisa Miller brought him international fame . At the Lyric Opera of Chicago he appeared in the following Verdi operas: 1971 in Don Carlo , 1972 in Un ballo in maschera , 1979 in Simon Boccanegra and 1985 in Otello .

In the early 1980s his career (with roles such as Iago in Verdi's Otello , Tonio in Leoncavallo's Pagliacci , Rigoletto in Verdi's Rigoletto or Enrico in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor ) experienced a brief slump due to health problems with his voice, which he overcame.
