The Lyric Opera of Chicago (LOC) is one of the leading opera houses in the United States .

It was founded in Chicago in 1954 under the name Lyric Theater of Chicago by Carol Fox, Nicola Rescigno and Lawrence Kelly . In the first season Maria Callas made her American debut as Norma . In 1956 the Fox company was reorganized under its current name. In the following years, some of the greatest stars in the opera world appeared regularly in Chicago. After Fox's resignation, Ardis Krainik (1981–1996), William Mason (1997–2011) and Anthony Freud (since 2011) ran the house.

The British conductor Sir Andrew Davis has been the musical director since 2000 .

The Lyric Opera is based in the Civic Opera House , a high-rise built in 1929. With 3,563 seats, it is the second largest opera house in the United States (after the New York Metropolitan Opera ).
