The Northwestern University ( NU or simply Northwestern ) is a private university in the state of Illinois in the United States with a twin campus in Evanston and Chicago . The main Evanston campus is 970,000 m² and is located on the shores of Lake Michigan . The Chicago campus measures 100,000 square feet and is located near the Magnificent Mile . The Chicago El , the urban subway, connects the Evanston campus with Chicago. Northwestern is famous around the world for its Kellogg School of Management (Kellogg for short) founded in 1908 .

The university is a member of the Association of American Universities , an association of North American research universities that has existed since 1900.

Northwestern University has approximately 15,000 students enrolled and nearly 7,100 employees. The Northwestern Foundation had funds of approximately $ 7.2 billion in 2008. The academic school year is divided into four quarters, with only reduced operations in the Summer Quarter .

The university was founded in 1851 by Methodists from Chicago (including John Evans , after whom Evanston was named) and was officially established on January 28, 1851, with the legislature's approval of the founding act. In 1855, it opened with two professors and 10 students. The university's name, Northwestern , came from the desire of its founders to serve residents of the states that comprise the area of ​​the former Northwest Territory : Ohio , Indiana , Illinois , Michigan , Wisconsin, and Minnesota . The original 1855 campus consisted of just one building, the makeshift Old College . The first permanent building, University Hall , was built in 1869.

In 1873 the Evanston College for Ladies was integrated into the university and Frances Willard , later famous for her commitment to women's suffrage , was appointed Dean for Women at the college . Northwestern became coeducational in 1869 following the insistence of the Dean Erastus Haven , the first woman graduating in 1874.

In the 1920s the university was expanded with a campus in Chicago. In the 1930s, Northwestern nearly merged with its academic rival, the University of Chicago . The plan was ultimately rejected by the Northwestern Supervisory Board.

In 1948, anthropologist Melville J. Herskovits founded an African studies program at Northwestern . This was the first of its kind at an academic institution in the United States.

In June 1978 the Unabomber's first letter bomb exploded at Northwestern University. The following year the university was also the target of his second attack. The injuries remained minor.

On January 11, 2003 announced George Ryan , the governor of Illinois, in a speech at Northwestern the pardon of all death row inmates in Illinois. Ryan said, "It is fitting that we here today, at Northwestern University, meet with those students, teachers, lawyers and investigators who first brought the dire conditions of the death penalty system to light." In the late 1990s, journalism took place - Northwestern students exposed information leading to Anthony Porter's pardon .

The founding charter of the university grants it permanent exemption from wealth taxes. Because of this, the Evanston government often has a difficult relationship with Northwestern. Northwestern is a founding member and the only private university of the Big Ten Conference in college sports. It is represented by eight men's teams and eleven women's teams in the NCAA Division I. Their sports teams call themselves The Wildcats . The official school colors are purple and white and until 1924 the teams were also known as The Purple . When a reporter from the Chicago Tribune described the football team as "a wall of purple wildcats" in 1924, the name became very popular and soon after became the official name. The mascot is called Willie the Wildcat .

The football team has existed since 1876 and celebrated its greatest success to date in 1949 when it won the Rose Bowl . Since then, the team has been noticed by some negative records, such as the series of 34 defeats between 1979 and 1982. In 1995, the team surprisingly won the Big Ten Conference and qualified once again for the Rose Bowl, which they lost to the University of Southern California . The team still holds the all-time record for losses and points received in Division IA. In October 2006, they lost a game against Michigan State University at 41-38 after they had led with 38-3 in the third quarter, 10 minutes from the end.

The currently most successful sports team at the NU is the one in women's lacrosse . It won the national championship for the third time in a row in 2007.

In addition, the professional golfer Luke Donald graduated from Northwestern and won the 1999 men's singles title of the NCAA golf championship.

In 2010, Northwestern was ranked 12th among US universities in the undergraduate ranking of the US News & World Report . In 2020, Northwestern University ranks 9th in the US News & World Report ranking. According to the Times Higher Education World Ranking 2020, Northwestern ranks 22nd among the best universities in the world, making it one of the top 30 universities in the world . For the graduate programs, Northwestern University is particularly renowned for its MBA program and came fourth in the US News & World Report ranking.
