Ali Babacan

Ali Babacan (* 1967 in Şereflikoçhisar , Ankara ) is a Turkish politician, former Foreign Minister of Turkey and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State from May 2009 to August 2015. He is the founder and party leader of the Demokrasi ve Atılım Partisi .

Life

Babacan left the private school TED Ankara College in 1985 as the best in his class. He then studied at the Technical University of the Middle East in Ankara and got his bachelor's degree. On a Fulbright Scholarship , Babacan went to the United States and received his Masters from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois in 1992 .

Babacan was Minister of State for Economic Affairs in the Gül Cabinet and Minister of State for the First Erdoğan Cabinet . From August 29, 2007, he was a member of the Second Erdoğan Cabinet until May 1, 2009, Foreign Minister and then Minister of State for the Economy, Banking and Treasury. Until the appointment of European Minister Egemen Bağış in January 2009, he was also the coordinator for Turkey's accession negotiations with the European Union . In the Cabinet Davutoğlu III he received no more ministerial posts.

On July 8, 2019, Babacan announced that he had left the AKP. One of the reasons he cited was the party's orientation, which was no longer compatible with its original values. The Demokrasi ve Atılım Partisi (DEVA) was founded on March 11, 2020, of which Babacan is chairman.
