İlter Türkmen

İlter Türkmen (born November 8, 1927 in Istanbul ) is a former Turkish diplomat and politician.

Life

İlter Türkmen was born in 1927 as the son of Behçet Türkmen (1899-1972), who was head of the Turkish intelligence service Milli Emniyet Hizmeti between 1953 and 1957 . İlter Türkmen attended Galatasaray High School and then studied political science at Ankara University . In 1949 he became an attaché at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in the following years worked in the planning department, then at embassies in Cairo and Washington, DC In 1968 he became ambassador to Athens during the Cyprus crisis . In 1972 he moved to Moscow as Turkey's ambassador.

From 1975 to 1978 Turkmen was permanent representative of Turkey to the United Nations in New York and 1979/80 Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Thailand.

After the military coup in Turkey in 1980 , the National Security Council appointed him Foreign Minister in October 1980. Turkmen remained in office until a democratic government was formed after the parliamentary elections in 1983 . 1983 to 1985 he worked as Permanent Representative of Turkey to the United Nations in Geneva. From 1985 to 1988 he was again Permanent Representative of Turkey to the United Nations in New York.

In 1988 he became ambassador to Paris. In 1991 he retired. Until 1996 he worked as Commissioner General at the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East .

In 1995 he ran for the Milliyetçi Hareket Partisi MHP in the province of Izmir for the Grand National Assembly of Turkey , but was not elected. For a short time he taught at the Galatasaray Üniversitesi in the Department of International Relations. He also wrote columns on international politics for the Hürriyet until 2008 .

Türkmen was married to Mina Ozgandiçi, with whom he has two children. His second marriage is to Füsun Türkmen.
