Feridun Cemal Erkin (* 1899 in Istanbul; † June 21, 1980 ) was a Turkish diplomat and politician. He was Turkey's Foreign Minister from 1962 to 1965.

Life

Feridun Cemal Erkin was born in Istanbul in 1899 as the son of the high Ottoman civil servant Mehet Cemal Bey. He had to interrupt school from 1916 to 1918 for military service and participation in the First World War. He attended the Galatasaray High School in Istanbul until 1920 and then studied law at the Sorbonne in Paris until 1925 and became a civil servant in the Turkish Foreign Ministry. From 1925 to 1927 he held an office in the Turkish Commission for Reparations. From 1927/28 he was first secretary at the embassy in Prague, from 1928/29 in London. Until 1933 he was head of the political department in the Turkish Foreign Ministry in Ankara, 1934/35 he worked as a legation councilor in Berlin, then until 1937 as consul general in Beirut . In 1937/38 he headed the trade department of the Foreign Office in Ankara. In 1939 he was briefly General Consul in Berlin and then headed the political department of the Foreign Ministry until 1942. Until 1945 he was Deputy State Secretary in the Foreign Ministry. In 1945 he was briefly ambassador of Turkey to the newly founded United Nations and in the following years worked as ambassador to Italy, the United States, Spain and France. In 1960 he was appointed advisor to the foreign minister and ambassador to London in the same year.

On April 1, 1962, Prime Minister Ismet Inönü appointed Erkin as Foreign Minister. He was in office until 1965 and then moved to the Turkish National Assembly as a CHP MP for Ordu . In 1970 he was selected as a senator by the president.
