Mehmet Şükrü Saracoğlu (born January 1, 1887 in Ödemiş , Izmir / Ottoman Empire , † December 27, 1953 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish politician. From 1942 to 1946 he held the office of Prime Minister of Turkey. He was also chairman of the Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi (CHP).

Life

Şükrü Saracoğlu was born in Ödemiş, a city in the province of Izmir, and graduated from elementary and middle school there. He received a scholarship in 1914 in Belgium , but had to because of the First World War in which Turkey to Izmir return.

From 1934 to 1950 he was the president of the Istanbul football club Fenerbahçe Istanbul and thus the second longest serving after Aziz Yıldırım in the club's history. The club's stadium is named after him.

Term of office

In the government of Fethi Okyar he served as Minister of Education until Okyar's resignation in 1925. In 1927 he was Minister of Finance under İsmet İnönü , Minister of Justice in 1933, and Foreign Minister from 1938 to 1942 under Celal Bayar and Refik Saydam . After Saydam's death, Saracoğlu was Prime Minister of Turkey from July 9, 1942 to August 7, 1946 and also chairman of the CHP. His pro-German foreign policy meant that Turkish-Soviet relations deteriorated drastically. Accordingly, Saracoğlu's first government was authoritarian and ultra-nationalist in domestic politics, although the Ministry of Education was headed by Hasan Ali Yücel , a left Kemalist . A nationalist Turanism was included in the government program. In the program of the first Saracoğlu government, he emphasized this nationalist stance with the following words:

"Friends! We are Turks, Turks and we will remain Turks. For us, turkishism is not just a matter of blood, but also a question of belief and culture. "

The Varlık Vergisi (German: wealth tax), which was levied by the Saracoğlu government, had a disastrous effect, especially for the minorities.

During the Second World War (in which Turkey remained neutral until February 1945), Saracoğlu signed the German-Turkish friendship treaty and made positive comments about Nazi Germany.

After the parliamentary elections in Turkey on May 21, 1946 - on August 7, 1946 - Recep Peker (1889–1950) became Prime Minister of Turkey and succeeded Saracoğlu.
