Saim Bülend Ulusu (born May 7, 1923 in Istanbul , † December 23, 2015 there ) was a Turkish admiral and prime minister under the military dictatorship of General Evrens.

Life

Saim Bülend Ulusu reached the highest admiral rank in the Turkish Navy in 1974 . From 1977 to 1980 he was Naval Commander in Chief.

Military coup

On September 12, 1980 , the military under General Evren launched a coup against the civilian government of Prime Minister Suleyman Demirel . Martial law was imposed and a military government established. Ulusu held the post of Prime Minister of Turkey from September 21, 1980. See also: Ulusu cabinet .

After elections were allowed in Turkey, his term of office ended on December 13, 1983, and Turgut Özal of the ANAP took over the office of Prime Minister.

Human rights violations

Numerous civil rights activists accuse the military government of massive human rights violations. Hundreds of politicians were imprisoned or house arrested between 1980 and 1983, thousands of critics of the regime tortured and hundreds of suspected enemies of the state executed.

The numbers differ slightly depending on the source. Accordingly, a good 600,000 people were interrogated and more than 200,000 were brought to justice. The courts passed several hundred death sentences, of which 50 were carried out. Around 300 people died under mysterious circumstances, and 171 deaths from torture can be proven. Others died as a result of poor prison conditions or (allegedly) committed suicide. More than 10,000 people were stripped of their citizenship, and thousands lost their jobs for political reasons.
