Yıldırım Akbulut (1988)

Yıldırım Akbulut (born September 2, 1935 in Erzincan , † April 14, 2021 in Ankara ) was a Turkish politician and Prime Minister of Turkey from 1989 to 1991 .

Yıldırım Akbulut was a member of the Anavatan Partisi (Motherland Party). The son of a postal worker studied law at the University of Istanbul and then worked as a lawyer .

His first political office was in 1983 as a member of the Turkish Grand National Assembly for the Erzincan constituency. Later he was Minister of the Interior in Turgut Özal's cabinet . From December 24, 1987 to November 9, 1989 he was President of Parliament .

After Özal was elected President of Turkey, Akbulut became Prime Minister and held this office from November 9, 1989 to June 23, 1991. However, Özal continued to exert influence on government affairs during this time, while Akbulut hardly showed any profile of its own.

From May 20, 1999 to September 30, 2000 Akbulut was President of Parliament for the second time. Yıldırım Akbulut was married and the father of three daughters.

In 1991 he was made an honorary citizen of Busan . Akbulut was awarded the State Order in 1999 by the Romanian President Emil Constantinescu .

He died in Ankara on April 14, 2021 at the age of 85.
