Suat Hayri Ürgüplü (born August 13, 1903 in Damascus , Ottoman Empire , † December 26, 1981 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish politician and Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey.

Life

Ürgüplü was the son of the sheikhul Islamic Urgüplü Mustafa Hayri Efendi , who after the declaration of war by Sultan Mehmed V in his fatwa of November 14, 1914, called for jihad against the enemies of the Ottoman Empire in the First World War. Ürgüplü comes from the family of Grand Vizier Nevşehirli Damat İbrahim Pascha .

Ürgüplü graduated from Galatasaray High School . In 1926 he graduated from the Faculty of Law at Darülfünun . He then worked in various positions as a civil servant. He was also active as an athlete in the Galatasaray Istanbul sports club . Ürgüplü worked as a judge at the Istanbul Commercial Court between 1929 and 1932.

In 1939 he was elected to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey as a member of the Kayseri Province . In the 2nd Saracoğlu government, Ürgüplü was Minister for Customs and Monopolies. After embezzlement allegations regarding coffee imports were made against him, he announced:

“A commission was set up in my ministry on coffee misappropriation, which also includes my name. In order for this investigative body to work in peace, I have to leave my chair, otherwise I would influence the commission and it would not come to a correct judgment. For this reason, out of political ethics, I am resigning. "

As a result, Ürgüplü was acquitted by the State Court of Justice (yüce divan) .

In 1950 he returned to parliament. Until 1952 he was a member of the Democrat Parti for the province of Kayseri. For some time, Ürgüplü was Deputy President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe . In 1952 he was appointed ambassador to Bonn. In 1955 he became Turkish Ambassador to the London Embassy , 1959 to the Washington Embassy and 1960 to Madrid. In the 1961 elections, he was elected Senator of Kayseri Province and the first President of the Senate. After the Prime Minister İsmet İnönü resigned on February 5, 1965, Ürgüplü from the Adalet Partisi was appointed Prime Minister. He remained in this office until the elections of October 10, 1965. In 1966 he was elected to the contingent senator and remained in this position until 1972.

According to the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Turkey , Ürgüplü was a Freemason .

His grave is in the Edirnekapı Martyrs Cemetery.
