Sadi Irmak

Mahmut Sadi Irmak (born May 15, 1904 in Seydişehir , † November 11, 1990 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish politician, doctor and translator. From 1974 to 1975 he was Prime Minister.

Life

Irmak was born in the city of Seydişehir in the Konya province of the Ottoman Empire . After graduating from Konya University, he became a biology teacher . In the same year he gave up this job and moved to the law faculty of Istanbul University .

In 1925 he went to Germany to study biology and medicine at the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin . After completing his studies, Irmak worked as an assistant doctor in hospitals in Hagen and Düsseldorf . Back in Turkey he taught biology again. In 1933 he became a lecturer at the medical faculty of Istanbul University and in 1939 professor of physiology there. Between June 7, 1945 and August 5, 1946, he served as Minister of Labor in the Cabinet of Şükrü Saracoğlu . In 1974 he was elected to the Turkish Senate and in the same year commissioned by President Fahri Korutürk to form the 38th cabinet. From November 16, 1974 to March 31, 1975 he was Prime Minister. However, he did not manage to get Parliament's vote of confidence. After the military coup on September 12, 1980, he was elected President of the Consultative Assembly. He held this office from October 27, 1981 to December 4, 1983.

Sadi Irmak has translated works by Goethe , Schopenhauer and Nietzsche from German into Turkish.
