Şemsettin Günaltay

Şemsettin Günaltay (* 1883 in Kemaliye , † October 19, 1961 in İstanbul ) was a Turkish politician, historian and Prime Minister of Turkey.

Life

Şemsettin Günaltay graduated from the University of Lausanne and returned to Turkey. He worked in several high schools as a headmaster. During this time he made the acquaintance of the thinker Ziya Gökalp . Then he began researching Turkish history. In 1914 Günaltay worked at the Darülfünun Faculty of Literature as a professor of Turkish history and Islamic peoples. He later became dean of the theological faculty.

Between 1914 and 1918 Günaltay was a member of the Ottoman Parliament for Bilecik ( Sandschak Ertuğrul ). For some time he was a member and deputy president of the city council in İstanbul. During the Turkish Liberation War he was active in the "Society for the Defense of the Rights of Anatolia and Thrace" ( Anadolu ve Rumeli Müdafaa-i Hukuk Cemiyeti ). During the II., III., IV., V., VI. and the VII legislative period he was a member of the Sivas Province in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey . During the IX. He was a member of the Erzurum Province . After Hasan Saka's resignation , Günaltay was appointed Prime Minister in 1949. He stayed in his post until Adnan Menderes came to power in 1950. Günaltay was also the provincial party leader of the Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi in İstanbul. In 1961 Günaltay was elected Senator. However, he died before he could take up his mandate on October 19, 1961 of prostate cancer in Ortaköy . His grave is in the Cebeci municipal cemetery in Ankara.

Günaltay was president of Türk Tarih Kurumu from 1941 until his death .
