The grouse ( Tetrastes ) are a species of bird from the family of pheasant-like (Phasianidae) used to order the chicken birds heard (Galliformes). As a rule, two species that occur in the Palearctic are now included in the genus . Hazel grouse are among the smallest grouse. They have very small beaks and lack a noticeable comb. Both species have 16 tail feathers and relatively small feet with featherless toes. Hazel grouse generally only fly up briefly and cannot fly long distances. The longest recorded flight for a hazel grouse is just over a kilometer. Their habitat are forest regions, they avoid open terrain.
Systematics
The genus Tetrastes is not recognized by some authors . Of these, both the hazel grouse and the black-breasted hazel grouse with the collar grouse belong to the genus Bonasus . These two genera are physiologically similar, but they differ greatly in their behavior. Hazel grouse form a monogamous pair bond. They lack the conspicuous courtship plumage or the conspicuous courtship actions for which the collar grouse is known.
