Steve Madge

Stephen "Steve" Charles Madge (born January 15, 1948 in Torpoint , Cornwall , † July 6, 2020 ) was a British ornithologist .

Life

After graduating from Saltash Grammar School, Madge worked as an assistant attendant at the Calf of Man ornithological station . From 1973 to 1979 he worked as a caretaker for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) at Bempton Cliffs and Fairburn Ings bird observatories. Since 1979 he has been a freelance writer and leader of bird watching tours, including for the ecotourism companies Sunbird (from 1979 to 1981), BirdQuest (1982 to 1995) and Limosa Holidays (1995). Madge worked on a wide variety of commissions and governing bodies, including the Ornithological Society of Turkey and its successor organization, the Ornithological Society of the Middle East (OSME), the East African Rarities Committee (1986), the British Birds Rarities Committee (from 1977 to 1988 ) and from 1989 in its advisory board for sea birds. Madge has been President of the Cornwall Birdwatching and Preservation Society since 1994. Madge's main interest is the study of the Palearctic and Oriental avifauna . He traveled to all continents, with Palearctic Asia and the Middle East being his favorite regions. Madge led the first organized bird exploration tours to Israel , Yemen and Central Asia . He is the author of several books and numerous articles published in Birding World , Courser , Dutch Birding , British Birds , Forktail and Scopus , among others . Since 1992 he has been a British member of the editorial board of Limicola, a bird journal published in Germany . From 1984 to 1995 he was editor of the Caradon Field and Natural History Club Annual Reports . Madge was also the co-author of various chapters in the Handbook of the Birds of the World , including on the stalk warbler and warbler families (Volume 11, 2006), the bag tit (Volume 13, 2008) and the corvids (Volume 14, 2009) .

Other interests of Madge included wildlife viewing tours, studying flora and moths, and conservation in Cornwall.
