The Halmsängerartigen (Cisticolidae) are a diverse family songbirds, formerly known as the subfamily of the warbler-like was (Sylviidae). They are small insectivorous birds with rounded wings and long, often stepped tails. Their size varies from 9 to 20 centimeters. Their legs are thin and their bills are pointed. There are 27 genera, 145 species and 529 subspecies taxa that occur in southern Europe, Africa, Asia and the Australasian zone. Their habitat are forests, savannas, grasslands, swamps, and semi-arid and dry scrubland. The plumage is light in the forest-dwelling species and dark in the species that inhabit open terrain.

Systematics

The following genera and species (selection) are currently (2019) assigned to the family:

Red-eared warbler ( Malcorus pectoralis )

The desert prinie ( Scotocerca inquieta ) was traditionally also counted among the stalksinger-like. On the basis of molecular genetic investigations, it is now placed in its own family Scotocercidae in the closer relationship of the tailed tits (Aegithalidae) and silkworm relatives (Cettiidae).
