Carl Jakob Sundevall (born October 22, 1801 on Gut Högestad, Ystad municipality , † February 2, 1875 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish zoologist.

Life

After studying at Lund University , which he graduated with a PhD in Philosophy in 1823 , Sundevall traveled to East Asia . He then studied medicine and became a doctor in this field of science in 1830. From 1830 to 1831 he headed the professorship in natural history in Lund and in 1834 he held the post of adjunct in economics and director at the zoological institute of Lund University. Here he headed the professorship in 1836. As early as 1831 and from 1833 to 1834 Sundevall worked at the Naturhistoriska riksmuseet , where he was finally responsible as a professor for the field of vertebrates between 1839 and 1871 . One of his works was Svenska foglarne , which described over 200 Swedish bird species . He also classified a number of birds that the collector Johan August Wahlberg brought back from southern Africa . In the meantime, Sundevall took part in a French expedition to Spitzbergen in 1839 . He was a member of various scientific organizations: the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences , the Royal Swedish Academy for Forestry and Agriculture , the Royal Physiographic Society in Lund , the Royal Science and Literature Society in Gothenburg , the Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala , the Prussian Academy of Sciences and the Russian Academy of Sciences .
