Ferit Melen

Ferit Sadi Melen (* 1906 in Van ; † September 3, 1988 in Ankara ) was a Turkish politician and Prime Minister of Turkey .

He completed elementary and middle school in Van. In 1928 he graduated from high school in Bursa . In July 1931 he graduated from the Faculty of Political Science at Ankara Üniversitesi . On August 26, 1931, he began to work as a civil servant in Bursa. From October 25, 1932 he worked as assistant finance inspector. On January 1, 1936, he was appointed inspector of the fourth class, on July 14, 1939, inspector of the third class, on January 26, 1940, inspector of the second class, and on January 28, 1943, inspector of the first class. He did his military service as an ensign between May 1, 1940 and November 27, 1941. Melen was sent to Paris for a year to do research on the French Ministry of Finance. On November 29, 1943, he was appointed General Director of Motor Vehicle Taxes. On June 30, 1946, Melen was appointed Director General for Income.

In the elections for the IX. In the legislative term, he was elected to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey as a member of the Van Province . He retired on September 30, 1959. In the XI. In parliament he was re-elected MP for the Van Province. He was a founding member of Van Province at the Constituent Assembly . In the IX. and the X. İnönü government he was finance minister without a parliamentary mandate. Between June 7, 1964 and October 14, 1979, he was Senator for Van Province. In 1968 he left Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi (CHP) and became a founding member of Güven Partisi . Between March 26, 1971 and May 22, 1972, he was Minister of Defense in the Erim government's I. and II . On May 22, 1972 he was appointed Prime Minister. In the IV. Demirel government he was again Minister of Defense on March 31, 1975 . On July 12, 1980, he was elected Senator by the President of the Republic. This function ended on September 12, 1980 with a military coup . In the parliamentary elections of 1983, he was elected one last time MP for the Van Province.

His grave is in the Cebeci municipal cemetery in Ankara.

The Vans airport is named after him.
