The Republican Confidence Party ( CGP , Turkish Cumhuriyetçi Güven Partisi ) or National Confidence Party (Milli Güven Partisi MGP ) is a former party in Turkey .

background

The Republican People's Party (CHP) is considered the founder of the Turkish Republic in 1923 and was thus the oldest party in the country; the ideology of the party was Kemalism with a strong emphasis on secularism . Bülent Ecevit , the General Secretary of the CHP from 1966, began to introduce newer ideas. Although he did not rule out Kemalism, he tried to transform the party into a social democratic party, avoiding the word social democratic . He announced that the party was " left of center " on the political spectrum . But this declaration also caused splits from the party.

Political history

A group of CHP MPs led by Turhan Feyzioğlu resigned from the CHP and founded the party of confidence on May 12, 1967. Prominent figures such as Nermin Neftçi , Coşkun Kırca , Orhan Öztrak and Ali İhsan Göğüs were among the founding members. In the 1969 election , the party of confidence received 6.6% of the vote and became the third largest party in parliament .

On January 29, 1971, the party was renamed the Nationalist Confidence Party . In the same year the party was part of the technocratic government , and the next year Ferit Melen of the CGP became Prime Minister. On May 4, 1973, the Republican Party (Cumhuriyetçi Parti) , a party also derived from the CHP, merged with the Nationalist Party of Trust. After the merger, the party was renamed the Republican Confidence Party.

Later years

In the 1973 election to the National Assembly , the Confidential Republican Party received 5.3% of the vote and participated in the 1975 coalition government, which was led by the Justice Party (AP). The party then lost support in the 1977 elections and was banned by military regulation on October 1, 1981 after the 1980 coup .
