Turhan Feyzioğlu (* 1922 in Kayseri ; † March 24, 1988 in Ankara ) was a Turkish politician . He was a member of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey , Minister of Education, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State.

Life

Feyzioğlu was born in 1922 to Sait Azmi. He attended elementary school in his home town and the Galatasaray grammar school until he graduated from university in 1941 . He then studied law at Istanbul Üniversitesi until 1945 . He completed his postgraduate studies at the French École nationale d'administration and at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. After his return he taught at Ankara Üniversitesi from 1946 and received his doctorate there in 1949. In 1955 he was appointed full professor and the following year dean of the Faculty of Political Science. He also wrote articles for the university's newsletter. However, this aroused the displeasure of the Turkish government and had to resign.

Politics in the CHP

In 1957 Feyzioğlu became a member of the Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi (CHP) and in the same year became a member of the Turkish Grand National Assembly for Sivas Province . In 1960, Feyzioğlu briefly returned to science and became rector of the Technical University of the Middle East in Ankara. In 1960, after the military coup, he became a member of the constituent assembly and education minister in the Gürsel II cabinet .

In the 1961 general election he was elected MP for Kayseri. Under İsmet İnönü , Feyzioğlu was first Minister of State and then Deputy Prime Minister in the next cabinet. During this time he was one of the leading figures in the CHP. When Bülent Ecevit became general secretary of the party in 1965 , the game moved to the left and Feyzioğlu, as a staunch Kemalist, did not want to go along this path .

Politics in the CGP

On May 12, 1967, Turhan Feyzioğlu and 47 other MPs broke with the CHP. They founded the Cumhuriyetçi Güven Partisi (CGP). Feyzioğlu became chairman of the new party. In 1971 the party was renamed Millî Güven Partisi and in 1973 the party merged with Cumhuriyetçi Parti , which had also split off from the CHP. The party was renamed Cumhuriyetçi Güven Partisi and Feyzioğlu remained chairman.

The CGP existed until 1980 and Feyzioğlu continued to work as a MP for Kayseri. While the CGP was initially the third-strongest force, the party subsequently lost popular support. Nevertheless, Feyzioğlu was twice deputy prime minister: in 1975 in the cabinet of Süleyman Demirel and in 1978 in the cabinet of Bülent Ecevit ( Cabinet Demirel IV and Cabinet Ecevit III ).

After the military coup in 1980 , Feyzioğlu withdrew from politics. He died in Ankara in 1988 at the age of 66.

Private life

Turhan Feyzioğlu was married to Leyla Cıngıllıoğlu. Their daughter Saide died just two hours after the birth of their son Metin on July 7, 1969. The boy was adopted by his grandparents. Metin Feyzioğlu became Professor of Criminal Law and became President of the Turkish Bar Association in May 2013 .
