Metin Feyzioğlu (born July 7, 1969 in Kadıköy , Istanbul ) is a Turkish lawyer . He has been Professor of Criminal Law and President of the Turkish Bar Association since May 26, 2013. Metin Feyzioğlu is known for his advocacy of the rule of law and publicly warns against authoritarianism and the undermining of the rule of law.

Origin and family

Metin Feyzioğlu was born in Istanbul in 1969. After his mother died right after his birth, he was adopted by his grandparents, grew up with them, and given their name. His grandfather Turhan Feyzioğlu was a lawyer and an active politician in the Republican People's Party (CHP). He viewed Bülent Ecevit's 1965 center-left movement as a departure from ideology and founded the Republican Confidence Party (CGP) in 1967, which tended to split the CHP. Turhan Feyzioğlu came from one of the oldest families in the city of Kayseri who were interested in law . His father Sait Azmi also served as a judge, teacher, and lawyer.

Metin Feyzioğlu is a graduate of private TED Ankara Koleji and graduated from Ankara University Law Faculty in 1990. He received his PhD in Public Law in 1995 and was then appointed Assistant Professor of Criminal Law at the Faculty of Law in Ankara in 1996, where he also graduated. He also graduated from Columbia University in New York City with a law degree. In 2000 he received the Doçent degree . After his professorship, he became dean of the Faculty of Law at Ankara University from 2007 to 2008 . On May 26, 2013, Metin Feyzioğlu was elected President of the Turkish Bar Association and was then elected President of the “Lawyers Group of the Democratic Left”.

A speech by Metin Feyzioğlu on the anniversary of the founding of the Constitutional Council in 2014 caused a scandal. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan , then head of government, apparently felt attacked by Feyzioğlu's admonitions. The President of the Chamber "exceeded the speaking time and gave a disrespectful speech full of lies", Erdoğan scolded in front of the cameras. After an exchange of words with Feyzioğlu, Erdoğan got up from his chair in the first row and left the hall with his entourage, furious.
