The Ecevit III cabinet was the 42nd government of Turkey , which was headed by Prime Minister Suleyman Demirel from January 5, 1978 to November 12, 1979 .
In the elections in September 1977 , Bülent Ecevit and the social democratic Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi (CHP) won 41.4 percent of the vote, narrowly missing an absolute majority. A CHP minority cabinet followed. Suleyman Demirel's conservative-liberal Adalet Partisi (AP) received 36.4 percent of the vote. The right-wing parties lost votes and the Islamic Millî Selamet Partisi also lost dramatically.
Ecevit's government was short-lived. The Prime Minister lost a vote of confidence in July 1977. Demirel forged a new edition of the "Cabinet of the Nationalist Front" with MSP and MHP , which together had a one-vote majority in parliament. However, this government only lasted a few months: after the disappointing performance of the governing parties in the local elections in December 1977, the coalition broke up and Ecevit tried again to establish a CHP minority government and incorporated 13 non-attached MPs into the government as ministers.
So the new government got a one-vote majority in parliament. The non-attached MPs were mostly renegade MPs from the Conservative parties, so the government could only adopt a minimal program, mainly aimed at ending the division in society, preventing civil war-like clashes between left-wing and right-wing groups, and curbing terrorism. But the violence increased and Ecevit was pressed to declare a state of emergency. The security forces took power in 13 provinces in the east of the country. Three CHP MPs then left the group in protest. Once again, the government no longer had a majority in parliament. In the Senate mid-term elections in October 1979, the Adalet Partisi received 46.8 percent of the vote, while the CHP was punished with 29 percent. Ecevit then resigned. Demirel was able to win a vote of confidence in an AP minority government on November 25, 1979, which was tolerated by Millî Selamet Partisi and Milliyetçi Hareket Partisi .
