Faruk Sükan

Mehmet Faruk Sükan (* 1920 in Karaman ; † January 3, 2005 in Ankara ) was a Turkish doctor and politician. He was a member of the Turkish National Assembly, Minister of Health and Welfare, Minister of the Interior, Minister of State and Deputy Prime Minister.

Life

After graduating from Konya Lisesi, Sükan studied human medicine at Istanbul Üniversitesi until 1946 and then completed specialist training as an internist. He then worked in the civil service.

In the 1950s he became a member of the Democrat Parti and was mayor of the city of Ereğli in Konya Province from 1957 to 1960 . In 1961 he became a member of the Adalet Partisi for Konya in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey . In 1965 he became Minister for Health and Social Welfare and from 1965 to 1968 he was Minister of the Interior under Suleyman Demirel .

At the end of the 1970s he co-founded the Democracy Parti and became its general secretary. In 1978 he was first Minister of State and then Deputy Prime Minister under Bülent Ecevit . After the military coup in Turkey in 1980 , he turned his back on politics.

Faruk Sükan was married to Guler Sükan and had four children.
