Ahmet Taner Kışlalı (born July 10, 1939 in Zile , † October 21, 1999 in Ankara ) was a Turkish political scientist, politician and journalist for the daily Cumhuriyet .

Life

Kışlalı was born in 1939 as the son of bank clerk Hüsnü Bey and elementary school teacher Lütfiye Hanim. He attended schools in Kilis and graduated from the Kabataş boys' grammar school in Istanbul in 1957 with a university entrance qualification. He then studied until 1963 in the Department of Political Science at Ankara Üniversitesi . During this time, Kışlalı wrote as a sports journalist for the daily Yeni Gün . He received his doctorate in politics in Turkey from the University of Paris and then worked as a professor at the Hacettepe University in Ankara and then in the department of political science of his alma mater . In 1968 Kışlalı married the young Nilüfer. The couple have two daughters.

In 1977 he was elected member of the Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey for Izmir . In 1978 and 1979 he was Minister of Culture under Bülent Ecevit . During his tenure, he was particularly committed to reprinting classic works through the state publishing house and bringing them to the market at a reasonable price. He also initiated his own magazine for the ministry.

After the military coup in Turkey in 1980 , Ahmet Taner Kışlalı returned to university and became a full professor in 1988. From 1991 he had a regular column in the daily Cumhuriyet with “Haftaya Bakış” (“A look at the week”) .

On October 21, 1999, at around 9:40 am, he faxed his latest article to the Cumhuriyet editorial team . Then he left the house and got into his vehicle. As he did so, he noticed a small package behind the windshield wiper. When he grabbed it with his left arm, the package exploded and tore off his left forearm. His wrist watch penetrated the skull with parts of the bomb. Only death could be determined in the hospital. The perpetrators could never be identified.

After memorial hours in the Turkish National Assembly, Ankara University, the Ankara Opera and the Cumhuriyet Capital Office in Ankara, as well as a funeral prayer in the Kocatepe Mosque , he was buried in the Karşıyaka Cemetery in Ankara.

Honors

In a park in Ankara, a life-size statue commemorates Ahmet Taner Kışlalı. A primary school in Izmir has been named after him.
