Zile is a district town and capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the Turkish province of Tokat . The city is located about 57 km west of the provincial capital Tokat . It is the fifth largest city in the province.
Her ancient name was Zela . Here the Roman general Gaius Iulius Caesar defeated the Bosporan king Pharnakes II on May 20, 47 BC. BC (according to the Julian calendar) in a battle of only four hours near Zela and sent the promotional message of victory " Veni, vidi, vici " ( "I came, saw, conquered" ) to Rome , which is known to this day . These three words can also be found on the city seal of Zile.
The district is located in the west of the province. It borders in the northwest on Turhal County , in the east on Artova County and in the south-west on Sulusaray County . External borders exist in the north and northwest ( Amasya province ) and in the south and southwest ( Yozgat province ) of the district. After the central district ( Merkez ) of the provincial capital, Zile is the second largest district in the province in terms of area.
Two highways cross the west of the district: the D190 from Delice ( Kırıkkale province ) ends in a west-east direction in Turhal, and the D850, which starts in Zile and leads south to the Niğde province .
In addition to the district town, the district consists of 114 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 197 inhabitants. Evrenköy (1,169), Ayvalı (1,070), Yıldıztepe (859), Kervansaray (742) and Boldacı (686 inh .) Are the largest villages. 39 villages have more than the average population.
The population density is 37.6 inh. Per km² below the provincial value, the urban population is 59.58 percent.
