Artova is a town and capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the Turkish province of Tokat . The city is located about 32 kilometers southwest of the provincial capital Tokat . According to the city seal, the district town was elevated to a municipality ( Belediye ) in 1944 .

The district is located in the southwest of the province. It is bordered by Yeşilyurt County in the south, Sulusaray County in the southwest , Zile County in the west , Pazar County in the north and the Central County in the east . The county town is connected by country roads with Yeşilyurt and Sulusaray in the southwest and with the provincial capital in the northeast, with the Horonbeli Geçidi pass (1260 meters) being crossed to the northeast . It is located on the railway line from Samsun to Kayseri.

The Karasu Deresi , a tributary of the Çekerek Çayı, flows through the city and the district from north to south . There are several small lakes in the district. Part of the Deveci Dağları mountain range extends through the north of the district .

The district was formed on June 1, 1944 and currently (as of 2018) consists of the district town and 26 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 166 residents. The population ranges from 444 ( Aşağıgüçlü ) to 24 ( Gazipınarı ). Eleven villages have more residents than 166 (= average). The villages Çelikli and İğdir became districts of the district capital in 2018. With 19.7 inhabitants per km², the population density is about a third of the provincial value (61.0). The urban population is 50.72 percent.
