Almus is a town and capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the Turkish province of Tokat . The city is located about 30 km east of the provincial capital Tokat . According to the city seal, Almus received the status of a municipality (Belediye) in 1954.
The district is in the east of the province. It borders in the west on the central district, in the north on the district Niksar , in the northeast on the district Reşadiye and in the south on the province of Sivas . The district town is connected to the provincial capital in the west by a country road, which crosses the 1250 meter high Namobeli Geçidi pass west of the city . The place is located at the Almus Barajı reservoir , through which the Yeşilırmak flows. To the north of it is the Köse Dağları Mountains with the 1820 meter high Dune Dağı .
The district was formed on March 1, 1954 and in 2018 consisted of the district town (16.9% of the district population) and five other Belediye (municipalities):

- Çevreli (2,582)
- Gölgeli (2,847)
- Kınık (3,123 pop.)
In addition, 32 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 248 residents belonged to the district . The population ranged from 1,151 ( Ormandibi ) to 45 ( Sarıören ). Eleven villages had more than 248 inhabitants.
The population density of the district was 27.5 inhabitants per km², slightly below half the provincial value (61.0). The urban population was 72.04 percent.
