Başçiftlik is a city and capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the Turkish province of Tokat . The city is located about 60 kilometers northeast of the provincial capital Tokat . According to the city seal, the place was raised to a municipality ( Belediye ) in 1968 .

The district is in the east of the province. It borders on Niksar County to the south, west and north and Reşadiye County to the east . The county town is connected to Niksar in the west and Reşadiye and Aybastı in Ordu Province to the east . The southern border of the district follows the river Kelkit Çayı , a tributary of the Yeşilırmak .

The district was formed in 1990 from some localities from Bucak Merkez of Niksar district and at the end of 2018 consisted of six villages ( Köy ) with an average of 135 inhabitants. The population ranged from 195 to 67 residents. In addition to the district town (59.5% of the district population), another Belediye belonged to the district: Hatipli (2,048 inhabitants). The population density was below the provincial average, the urban population was 88.55 percent.
