The Kelkit Çayı is the most important right tributary of the Yeşilırmak in northern Turkey .
The kelkit Çayı has the ancient name Lykos (Latinized Lycus ). It rises in the Eastern Pontic Mountains in the province of Gümüşhane north of the small town of Kelkit . From there it flows in a predominantly west-northwest direction through the provinces of Erzincan , Giresun , Sivas and Tokat , before flowing into the Yeşilırmak northwest of the city of Erbaa . There are two dams on the middle course: the Kılıçkaya dam and then the Çamlıgöze dam . On the lower reaches, over a distance of 150 km from Suşehri via Reşadiye to Niksar , the Kelkit Çayı flows along the North Anatolian Fault . The Çayı Kelkit has a length of 356 km. It drains an area of 10,600 km².
