Kelkit is a town and at the same time the administrative center of the district of the same name in the province of Gümüşhane in northeastern Turkey in the Black Sea region . The name most likely comes from Armenian and is composed of the original words Kail and Kjed , which means "Wolf River" and is the name of the river Kelkit Çayı, which flows past the city . The city is about 37 km (60 km by road) south of the provincial capital Gümüşhane .

district

The district is the southernmost in the province, has the second largest area after the central district and also the second largest population. It borders in the west on the Şiran district , in the north on the central district ( Merkez ) Gümüşhane and in the northeast on the district Köse . In the south the province of Erzincan forms the border and in the southeast the province of Bayburt .

In addition to the district town (around a third of the district's population), the district has five other municipalities ( Belediye ):
