Torul is a city and administrative center of the district of the same name in the province of Gümüşhane in northeastern Turkey . The city is located about 25 km (36 kilometers by road) west of the provincial capital on the Harşit Çayı River .

The district of Torul is located in the north of the province and borders in the southeast on the central district ( Merkez ) Gümüşhane and in the northwest on the district Kürtün . The border is formed by the province of Giresun in the southwest and the province of Trabzon in the northeast . On May 20, 1990, the district gave the northeastern part of its territory to the newly founded district of Kürtün. With only 14 inhabitants per square kilometer, it is the most sparsely populated district in the province (provincial average: 24).

The Torul Dam was completed in 2007 north of the district town of Torul .

Besides the district town (with a third of the population of the district –2018: 37.83%), the district also consists of 37 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 231 residents. Altınpınar is the largest village (875 inhabitants).
