Şiran , also Karaca , is a city and at the same time the administrative center of the district of the same name in the province of Gümüşhane in northeastern Turkey . The city is located about 42 km southwest of the provincial town of Gümüşhane . The name Şiran could be derived from the Persian word for lion or a modification of the former Greek name Khairena .
The district Siran is located in the southwest of the province and is bordered to the north by the county Torul and the east by the county Kelkit . In the west the Giresun province forms the border, in the south the Erzincan province .
In addition to the district town, the district also consists of the municipality ( Belediye ) Yeşilbük (1,931 inhabitants) and 64 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 119 inhabitants. This is the lowest average for the villages in a district, the provincial average for the 318 villages is 191 inhabitants. Akbulak is the largest village with 506 inhabitants. The villages of Bilgili and Örenkale have been districts (Mahalle) of the district town since 2018.
Pontic Greeks lived in the north of the district until 1922 , who then left Şiran through a population exchange between Greece and Turkey .
