Gümüşhane , formerly German Gümüschchane , is a Turkish city in Anatolia and the capital of the Gümüşhane province of the same name . It is located in the eastern Black Sea region at approx. 1150 m above sea level. Gümüşhane was founded in the narrow valley of the Harşit Çayı River , which separates the Zigana Mountains from the Gümüşhane Mountains . The name of the city ("silver house") is probably a translation of the Greek name Argyroupólis ("silver city"). Silver has been mined in the vicinity of the city since ancient times . At the same time, the city is also the center of the central district ( Merkez )
district
The central district ( Merkez ) Gümüshane is central to northeast in the province. It borders on Torul County in the northwest and west, Kelkit County in the south and Köse County in the southeast. The border is formed by the Trabzon Province in the north and Bayburt Province in the east .
The district is the largest in terms of area and population. In addition to the district town and the provincial capital, it consists of the municipality ( Belediye ) Arzularkabaköy ( 3820 inhabitants). 92 villages ( Köy ) (with an average of 151 inhabitants) complete the structure of the central district. Tekke with 1,006 inhabitants is the largest village. Akçakale village has been a district (Mahalle) of Gümüşhane city since 2018.
