Muzaffer Özdemir (* 1955 in Gümüşhane ) is a Turkish actor .

Life

Muzaffer Özdemir made his acting debut in 1999 when he played the leading role of the same name in Nuri Bilge Ceylan's film Affliction in May . The drama tells the story of the young Muzaffer who returns to Anatolia in his hometown to realize a film project with his family members. There the filmmaker is confronted with the problems of parents and relatives: his cousin dreams of a future in Istanbul, while Muzaffer's father threatens to lose a piece of forest to the land registry . The strongly autobiographical film (father and mother are played by the parents of the director) was published by the daily newspaperpraised for its almost Buddhist calm and the unusual editing technique, while the New York Times compared the work with the works of Abbas Kiarostami . Distress in May won a number of international film and festival awards , including the FIPRESCI award at the 2000 European Film Awards and awards from the Angers , Ankara , Antalya , Bergamo and Istanbul film festivals .

Özdemir's breakthrough as an actor paved the way for 2002 when he worked again with Nuri Bilge Ceylan on the drama Uzak - Weit (2002), the last part of a trilogy about the differences between rural and urban life. Here the Turkish actor acts as a formerly ambitious photographer Mahmut, who earns his living with advertising photos for catalogs. However, a visit from a young relative (played by Mehmet Emin Toprak ) from the provinces throws Mahmut's little world off balance. In his youthful eagerness, Yusuf tries in vain to find a job in the Turkish city to support his backward family. Uzak - Weit premiered in Turkey at the end of 2002 and was featured in the 2003 Cannes Film Festival competition almost five months later , where it was critically acclaimed. Nuri Bilge Ceylan's film had to admit defeat to the US American Gus Van Sant's drama Elephant in the competition for the Golden Palm , but it was awarded the second most important award, the Grand Jury Prize. Muzaffer Özdemir and Mehmet Emin Toprak, who died in 2002, were the first and so far only Turkish actors to receive the award for the best actor of the film festival for the part of the uncouth egoist Mahmut . Uzak - Weit also received positive reviews in Germany, where the film was only released three years after it was made . The characters are cold, according to the Süddeutsche Zeitung , which compared the film with works by Andrei Tarkowski .
