Cannes International Film Festival / Grand Jury Prize
The Grand Prix of the Jury ( Grand Prix du Jury or Grand Prix ) honors the most original competition film (feature film) or the one with the greatest research spirit at the annual Cannes Film Festival . The second most important award after the Palme d'Or was first awarded as Grand Prix Spécial du Jury at the thirteenth edition of the film festival in 1967 and replaced the Prix spécial du Jury previously awarded . Since 1990 the award has been commonly referred to as the Grand Prix . The competition jury, which is usually composed of international filmmakers, votes on the award of the prize, which is presented to the winner in the form of a certificate.
Award winners
The works of French and Italian film directors (10 honors each) were most frequently awarded the Grand Jury Prize, followed by their colleagues from the USA (6) and Great Britain (4). The Soviet director Andrei Tarkowski (1972 and 1986), the French Bruno Dumont (1999 and 2006), the Turkish Nuri Bilge Ceylan (2003 and 2011) and the Italian Matteo Garrone (2008 and 2012) each received two awards .
Several times in the past, the jury was unable to agree on a winner. Film directors from German-speaking cinema were successful for the first time in 1975, when Werner Herzog ( everyone for himself and God against all ) was able to prevail against the competition. He was followed by Wim Wenders , who wrote In Weit Ferne, so nah! In 1993 . was awarded. There was a small scandal at the 1995 award when the Greek Theo Angelopoulos ( The Glance of Odysseus ) accepted the award with the words "If that's what you have to give me, I have nothing to say" and took the stage left and the Golden Palm was awarded to Emir Kusturica ( Underground ). Three years later Angelopoulos was to receive the Golden Palm for his film Eternity and a Day (1998).
In the past, juries had the opportunity to combine the Grand Prix with other awards. This happened most recently in 2003, when Turkey's contribution Uzak - wide and the Best Actor Award for the actors Muzaffer Ozdemir and Mehmet Emin Toprak was awarded. In the meantime, the regulations prohibit the jury's Grand Prize (as well as the Palme d'Or and the Director’s Prize ) from being cumulative with other awards. This fact has been criticized repeatedly, most recently in 2012, when the jury president Nanni Moretti admitted in the final press conference that he would have awarded the Palme d'Or, Michael Haneke's love , the actor and screenplay award without any regulations.
