biography

Matteo Garrone is the son of theater critic Nico Garrone and a photographer. In 1986 he graduated from an art high school in Rome and then painted for several years. He gained his first film experience as a cameraman. His directorial debut was the short film Silhouette (1996), with which he won the Sacher Award donated by Nanni Moretti , named after his favorite cake, the Sacher Torte . At the same time he also founded his own production company Archimede . His first film Terra di mezzo linked short film episodes about Albanian immigrants and Nigerian prostitutes in Rome. The mixture of documentary and fictional material was the starting point for his first feature- length film with a similar theme, Ospiti .

Garrone's feature film Primo amore was shown in the competition at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2004 under the title Body of Love . However , he could not prevail against the film Against the Wall by Fatih Akın .

In 2008 his film adaptation of Roberto Saviano's novel about the Camorra premiered in Cannes under the title Gomorrah - Journey into the Realm of Camorra . The film was nominated for the main prize of the festival, the Palme d'Or , and received the Grand Jury Prize . Months later, the film was selected as the official Italian entry for the nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2009 Academy Awards, nominated for the Golden Globe Award , and honored in five categories at the 2008 European Film Awards , including film, directing and screenwriting.

After the success of Gomorrah , Garrone completed his feature film Reality in 2012 , which was inspired by the hit television show Grande Fratello , the Italian version of Big Brother . The film tells the story of a fishmonger from Naples (played by Aniello Arena ) who is so enthusiastic about the series that he lives his life as if he were the star of Grande Fratello . For Reality , starring Claudia Gerini , Ciro Petrone and Arturo Gambardella , Garrone received his second invitation to the competition at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2012 , where he was once again awarded the Grand Jury Prize. In the same year Garrone was appointed to the competition jury of the 69th Venice International Film Festival .
