Fatih Akin ( Turkish Fatih Akın , phon. [ Faːtɪç ˈaːkɪn ], born August 25, 1973 in Hamburg ) is a German film director , screenwriter , actor and producer .

For his fourth feature film Gegen die Wand with Birol Ünel and Sibel Kekilli in the leading roles, Akin was awarded the Golden Bear , the German Film Prize and the European Film Prize in 2004. In 2018, his feature film Out of Nowhere received the Golden Globe .

Live and act

Fatih Akin is the son of Turkish immigrants . His father, Enver, from Çaycuma in the province of Zonguldak , moved to Germany in 1966. His mother followed three years later. Akin was born and raised in the Hamburg district of Altona , where he attended the Allee high school. At times he was a member of a youth gang. Already in school, Akin wrote short stories and short scripts, made his first film attempts with a Super 8 camera and became a member of an off-theater group at the Hamburg Thalia Theater .

Fatih Akin lives in Hamburg-Ottensen and is married to the German-Mexican Monique Akin . You have two children. Together with friends, he has been supporting the Soul kids association since 2009 . In protest against the Swiss construction ban on minarets , Akin canceled participation in the Swiss premiere of Soul Kitchen .

Because of the police violence perpetrated during the protests in Turkey in 2013 and the media censorship in Turkey, Akin wrote an open letter to Turkish President Gül and supported an initiative by cultural workers calling on Angela Merkel and other European politicians to stand up for an end to the violence to use the Turkish population. “I appeal to your conscience: Stop this madness!” He wrote in the letter, which was written in German and Turkish.

In 1993, Akin began working as a temporary worker in front of and behind the scenes at the desert film production run by Hamburg producers Stefan Schubert and Ralph Schwingel, and increasingly worked as a writer , director and actor. After graduating from high school, he studied visual communication at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts (HfbK) from 1994 to 2000 . The collaboration with Schwingel initially resulted in two short films , Sensin (1995) and Getürkt (1996). In 1998 Akin made his debut as a feature film director with Short and painless , followed by further directorial work in In July (2000) and Solino (2002), in which he entrusted Moritz Bleibtreu with the male lead.

In 2004 Akin founded the film production company Corazón International together with Andreas Thiel and Klaus Maeck . In the same year he realized the first part of a planned trilogy about love, death and the devil with the feature film Gegen die Wand and filmed Heinrich Heine's song Die alten, böse Lieder as a German contribution to the episode film European Visions produced by Lars von Trier . Akin received the Golden Bear for Gegen die Wand at the Berlinale 2004 , later the German Film Prize and the European Film Prize.

In recognition of his filmmaking Akin was in the 2005 jury of the film festival in Cannes invited. In the 2005/06 winter semester he was given a teaching position at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts . In the same year Akin published his first full-length documentary Crossing The Bridge - The Sound of Istanbul , in which he reports on the musical diversity of Istanbul, and worked on the script for the intercultural comedy Kebab Connection .

In 2007 Akin became a member of the Free Academy of the Arts Hamburg . In the same year he realized the second part of his Love, Death and the Devil trilogy with On the Other Side . The drama premiered in competition at the 60th Cannes Film Festival , where Akin was awarded the special prize of the Ecumenical Jury for his script. On the other hand, besides other prizes, received the German Film Prize in the categories of film, directing and screenwriting as well as the script prize of the European Film Prize 2007 .

While working on On the Other Side , Akin started a long-term documentary film project entitled Garbage in the Garden of Eden about a planned landfill in Çamburnu , his grandparents' home village. The film premiered in 2012 during a special screening at the 65th Cannes Film Festival. Akin contributed the play Der Name Murat Kurnaz to the episode film Germany 09 - 13 short films on the state of the nation .

Before the production of his most expensive project, The Cut , at 15 million euros , the production company Corazón International was dissolved; Akin founded his own production company, Bombero International . The Cut , the third and final part of his Love, Death and the Devil trilogy, is set against the backdrop of the Armenian genocide . The film was invited to the competition at the Venice International Film Festival in 2014 , but flopped at the German box office after bad reviews. Akin was threatened by Turkish right-wing extremists because of the project ; At the beginning of 2015 he visited the Zizernakaberd Genocide Museum in the Armenian capital Yerevan . At the end of 2015, Akin shot the film adaptation of Wolfgang Herrndorf's novel Tschick , based on a script that he wrote together with Hark Bohm and Lars Hubrich . The film was released in German cinemas on September 15, 2016.

Akin's next film, Out of Nowhere, was announced during the Cannes Film Festival in 2016 , which he directed as a Franco-German co-production with Diane Kruger in the lead role. The thriller premiered in May 2017 at the 70th Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Palme d' Or. For her leading role, Diane Kruger received the Acting Award, while the film Out of Nowhere received the Golden Globe Award and the Critics' Choice Movie Award for best foreign language film in 2018 . In July 2016 Akin shot an MTV Unplugged with Marius Müller-Westernhagen in the Berliner Volksbühne . In the eighth season of Circus HalliGalli , he had a guest appearance in 2016 in the category “The fastest interview in the world”, in which Klaas Heufer-Umlauf interviewed him .

In 2017 he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
