Cannes International Film Festival / Best Actress
The prize for the best actress ( Prix d'interprétation féminine ) honors the best acting performance of a leading or supporting actress in a competition film (feature film) at the annual Cannes Film Festival . The award was first presented at the premiere of the film festival in 1946. The competition jury, which is mostly made up of international filmmakers, will vote on the award of the prize, which will be presented to the winner in the form of a miniature of the Golden Palm and a certificate.
Prize winners
American film actresses (20 victories) were most frequently awarded the actor's prize, followed by their colleagues from France (17), Great Britain (10) and Italy (5). The two Britons Vanessa Redgrave (1966 and 1969) and Helen Mirren (1984 and 1995), the French Isabelle Huppert (1978 and 2001) and the American Barbara Hershey (1987 and 1988) each triumphed twice . One of the youngest winners in the history of the Cannes Film Festival is British Jodhi May , who was honored in 1988 at the age of twelve for her performance in Chris Menges ' drama Two Worlds together with Barbara Hershey and the South African Linda Mvusi .
Several times in the past, the jury was unable to agree on a winner, while in 1955 and 2006 the entire female cast of a film was honored. Actresses from German-speaking cinema were successful in 1983, 1986 and 2017, when Hanna Schygulla ( The Story of Piera ), Barbara Sukowa ( Rosa Luxemburg ) and Diane Kruger ( From Nowhere ) were able to prevail against the competition.
