When they both get married, they are rejected from all sides - Frank's parents, especially his father, reject the white Julie and Julie's family is also hostile to the marriage. The situation comes to a head when Julie's ex-husband returns and tries to secure custody of their daughter. He argues in court that the child's best interests are threatened by being associated with an African-American. Frank and Julie fight for parental rights in a racist environment, but the judge follows the ex-husband's explanations and awards the daughter to the father.
