Barbara Barrie (* 23. May 1931 in Chicago , Illinois as Barbara Ann Berman ) is an American actress and children's book author .

Life

Barrie was born Barbara Ann Berman in Chicago, Illinois, USA and is the daughter of Frances Rose (née Boruszak) and Louis Berman. She is of Jewish descent and was raised in Texas .

Barrie is a widow and mother of two children, Aaron and Jane. She was married to her husband Jay Harnick from 1964 until his death in 2007. He was the brother of the musical writer Sheldon Harnick ( Anatevka ). Barrie was successfully treated for colorectal cancer and wrote memoirs entitled Second Act: Life After Colostomy and Other Adventures (in German: Second Act: Life After Colostomy and Other Adventures ).

Career

Barbara Barrie had a long career on stage and in film and television. She received the Prix ​​d'interprétation féminine at the Cannes Film Festival in 1964 (together with Anne Bancroft ) for her role in reputation not too loud . Other significant roles were that of Susan's grandmother ( Brooke Shields ) in the sitcom Susan and that of Hal Linden's wife in Barney Miller .
