Roots - The Next Generations is an American miniseries from 1979. It is the continuation of the successful series Roots , in which the family story of Alex Haley is told. The series premiered in Germany on August 9, 1982.

In 1882, Tom Harvey, Kunta Kinte's great-grandson, became one of the black leaders in Henning, Tennessee . Although he works for Col. Warner, head of the city, tensions between whites and blacks are growing.
Tom's daughter, Cynthia, marries the able-bodied black Will Palmer, who soon takes over the local timber warehouse. As the city and the timber trade grow, both of them can send their daughter Bertha to college, where she falls in love with her classmate Simon Haley, son of a farmer. After graduating from college, he was sent to the First World War as a soldier .
After the war he returns and marries Bertha. He teaches agriculture in Alabama and in the time of the New Deal he organizes the farmers against the big landowners. Her son Alex is persuaded by Simon to enlist as a soldier for World War II. After the war he became a journalist and joined the civil rights movement in the 1960s. Finally, Alex travels to Africa and learns the story of the kidnapping of his ancestor Kunta Kinte by a member of the tribe.

The production by David L. Wolper Productions and Warner Bros. Television directed Georg Stanford Brown, Charles S. Dubin, John Erman and Lloyd Richards. The music was composed by Gerald Fried. Locations were Savannah (Georgia) and Newhall ( Los Angeles County ).
The contents of the individual episodes from Roots - The Next Generations are largely based on the last seven chapters of the novel Roots by Alex Haley. There are a few differences; in addition, some passages by Alex Haley have been added.
Awards
The series won two Emmys in 1979 and was nominated for five more. The series was also nominated in 1980 for a Golden Globe in the category Best Series - Drama .
